During the last 24 hours, Highland Park has experienced three public safety incidents: a shooting at Highland Park Hospital and two robberies in downtown Highland Park.
Early this morning, Highland Park Police received a call for assistance at Highland Park Hospital. The call was related to a 27-year old man involved in a car accident at 11:00pm last night, who had been taken to Highland Park Hospital. While hospital staff attempted to treat him, he became aggressive. He proceeded to draw a handgun, placing the hospital staff and officers in immediate danger. After repeated efforts to get him to drop his weapon, officers fired. The man was shot and succumbed to his wounds. No other injuries were reported.
The Lake County Major Crimes Task Force (MCTF) is conducting the investigation in this case. The MCTF is a multi-jurisdictional entity that is comprised of members from various law enforcement agencies. Click here for more detailed information.
Unrelated to the incident at Highland Park Hospital, at about 5:30 last night, the Subway restaurant at First Street and Elm Place was robbed. Today at approximately 7:00 a.m., Elm Place Tailoring Cleaners (in the same vicinity) reported a similar robbery. In both cases the offender fled on foot. No firearm was displayed.
The area was searched using a K-9 Unit and businesses in the vicinity were checked by police officers on foot. Schools were put on soft lockdown to ensure our children’s safety. Once it was clear that the suspect was no longer in the area, the lockdown was removed. Unfortunately, he remains at large. Click here for a description of the suspect and additional information.
