Join us as we observe Veterans Day on Monday, November 12 at 11:00 a.m. at Memorial Park, 405 Propsect Ave. (across from the library) with a special ceremony by American Legion Highland Park Post 145, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Jewish War Veterans.
Our featured speakers are Captain Randall J. Lynch, Commanding Officer, Naval Station Great Lakes and Lt. Colonel John Novak, Commander, 16th Psychological Operations Battalion, Ft. Sheridan. State Representative Karen May, State Senator Susan Garrett and Congressman-elect Brad Schneider will join us as will our Highland Park Military Liaison, William Schur. Music will be provided by the Highland Park High School Band. Cub Scouts from Pack 34 and Boy Scouts from Troop 324 will participate as well.
We will also be recognizing two Heroes Among Us: Marshall Domash, US Navy veteran of World War II and Sid Robbins, US Navy vetaran (deceased) of World War II.
In observance of Veterans Day, City offices will be closed. I hope you will join us in honoring our military veterans.
My speech follows:
It is the Soldier, not the minister
Who has given us freedom of religion.
It is the Soldier, not the reporter
Who has given us freedom of the press.
It is the Soldier, not the poet
Who has given us freedom of speech.
It is the Soldier, not the campus organizer
Who has given us freedom to protest.
It is the Soldier, not the lawyer
Who has given us the right to a fair trial.
It is the Soldier, not the politician
Who has given us the right to vote.
It is the Soldier who salutes the flag,
Who serves beneath the flag,
And whose coffin is draped by the flag,
Who allows the protester to (speak out).
Good morning and welcome to our Veterans Day ceremony! We have a wonderful morning planned with music from our high school band, special participation by members of our three veterans organizations: American Legion Highland Park Post 145, Veterans of the Foreign Wars Post 4737 and the Jewish War Veterans Post 29. Our distinguished guest speakers today are Rep. Karen May, Sen. Susan Garrett, Lt. Colonel John Novak, Commander of the 16th Psychological Operations Battalion from Ft. Sheridan and Captain Randall Lynch, Commanding Officer of Naval Station Great Lakes. Welcome all and thank you for joining us! During today’s ceremony, we will be highlighting two local Heroes Among Us, but today we are, of course, celebrating all of the veterans among us.
Special thank you to my Council colleagues for joining us: Jim Kirsch, Dan Kaufman, Paul Frank, David Naftzger, Steve Mandel and Tony Blumberg as well as our City Manager Dave Knapp, our military liaison William Schur, former Mayor Dan Pierce and Congressman-elect Brad Schneider, Senator-elect Julie Morrison and Representative-elect Scott Drury. Thank you also to Cub Scout Pack 34 and Boy Scout Troop 324 for their assistance today.
