Join us as we celebrate our nation’s birthday!  The festivities begin Wednesday, July 4, 2012 at 9:30 a.m. with the Children’s Bike & Pet Parade, sponsored by the Highland Park Chamber of Commerce. Immediately following is the annual Fourth of July parade, hosted by the City and the Park District.

This year’s parade theme is “Highland Park: A Look Back in Time.” The theme was chosen as numerous Highland Park institutions are celebrating significant anniversaries this year: Highland Park Library (125 years), Girls Scouts (100 years), Sunset Foods (75 years), Ravinia Festival Women’s Board (50 years), and Sherwood School (50 years), among others.

Keeping with the spirit of celebrating our past, I invited former Mayors Ray Geraci, Dan Pierce and Michael Belsky to serve together as honorary Grand Marshals of the parade. Bringing this group together represents all of the civic leaders who helped shape our past and set our course for the future.

Ray Geraci was Mayor from 1970 – 1975 and from 1995-1999. Dan Pierce was Mayor from 1987 – 1995 and again from 1999 – 2003.  Michael Belsky was Mayor from 2003 – 2011.

In addition, we are pleased to be hosting several members of the U.S. Navy from Naval Station Great Lakes along with numerous bands, civic organizations, businesses and community groups in the parade.

Also celebrating our beginnings, the Highland Park Historical Society is opening the Stupey Log Cabin to the public from 8:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. Following the parade, the Park District hosts Fourth Fest in Sunset Park, featuring food, rides, music and games for the family. Fourth Fest runs from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m.

At 6:00 p.m., Late Nite HP/Bitter Jester’s Battle of the Bands Championship begins with the semi-finals, then finals at Wolters Field. The celebration concludes with fireworks at dusk. Alternatively, the Park District is offering Float and Fireworks at Hidden Creek Aqua Park.

Looking forward to sharing the day with you! Thank you in advance to all who have worked to bring our community and this celebration together!
